It’s Thanksgiving weekend and the day after Black Friday. A lot of us have gone shopping. If you’re like me, you’ve probably bought a few things you’ve been eyeing. In my case, that was a cream top at Anthropologie and a classic v-neck shirt from J.Crew. My sister Naomi is one of the most organized people I know and she taught me a great lesson. Every time you buy something new, give one thing away! She lives abroad so her minimalism is also practical. I’ve lived in the same house for 10 years and it’s easy to simply collect new things, furniture, clothing, shoes, etc. But, when I look around my house, I don’t want to see clutter or things I like but don’t love. I want my closets to be full of only the things I wear or use regularly (and that goes for the things my husband and kids wear or use regularly, too!)
Consider taking this simple challenge and give away the same number of items you bought this weekend. If you didn’t shop this weekend, then give away a minimum of 5 things. I guarantee you’ll feel lighter and just possibly a little happier! Decluttering and organizing even just one drawer or one closet is an incredibly gratifying task. And, if you can, donate your old clothes, toys, shoes, appliances to an organization like Goodwill. You’ll feel so good about giving your unused or underused items a new home!
